Elephant Seal Preserve

Near the Piedras Blancas lighthouse at the northern end of San Luis Obispo County is an Elephant Seal Preserve, home to hundreds of Northern Elephant Seals. The prime time to come is in the winter.  The bulls arrive in early December and stake out their territories.  The females arrive in late December and give birth to pups conceived last year.  After one month, the pups are weaned and the females mate with the dominant alpha male, then leave. This amazing spot is 30 minutes north of Cayucos on Highway 1.
